I'm usually a non proponent of copy software but in this case I would make an exception since I already paid my fees and I'm not paying them again. If anyone knows any way around this it would be great to hear about it. SO if you buy a Garmin product make sure you understand that the software is locked to the unit and you are SOL if you want to get a new unit, or lose it for that matter etc.

Much to my suprise you cannot upgrade hardware or replace broken hardware without buying a new software license for 7K Baht each time. So when I went back to the USA I bought the 880 and took both units to ESRI to have the maps unlocked on the 880 and relocked on the 660 since they only allow one map per unit. The number of maps you can put in is only limited by the size of your SDmicro card. EsriThai.img, Malsyai.img etc etc and they will be recognized. You can now load all your maps into the SDmicro /map in your own name e.g. Also in your internal memory create a Subdir /map same thing but will take up space. You can now create a subdir in your SDMicro card called /map and place all your maps into the subdir in the SDMicro, no more need to have gmapsupp.img etc although they still will be used.

I now have both the European map and the Thailand map installed in the internal memory, I'm not sure but maybe the file name gmapsupp.img is only recognised if it is installed on a SD card. img files in the folder gmapbmap.img (Base Map) gmaptz.img (Time Zone) and gmapprom (Installed Map).įirst I tried copying the TSM v10 map into the folder and renaming it gmapsupp.img but it was still not recognised, but then I tried renaming it gmapprom1.img and everything is working fine. To view the folder with windows go to Tools/Folder options/View then tick "view hidden files and folders" and untick "Hide protected operating system files". It turns out that on some newer nuvi models the map files are in a hidden folder Garmin\System.
